On paper, a Division II team like Kentucky Wesleyan should beat a team like Lindsey Wilson, which competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
But when the two teams line up opposite each other at 6 p.m. Saturday at Steele Stadium, KWC coach Brent Holsclaw knows his team can't afford to overlook its opponent.
"They're 2-0 to start off, so they've tasted winning twice, and we haven't yet," said Holsclaw, preparing for his first-ever game against Lindsey Wilson. "Obviously, they're feeling pretty good about themselves right now, and we're obviously disappointed off our performance from last Thursday night (agaist Kentucky State). We didn't play real well."
The Blue Raiders beat Campbellsville 24-17 at home in their first game, then earned a 50-45 road win over Reinhardt University last weekend.
KWC, on the other hand, took a 42-6 loss at home to Kentucky State.
Holsclaw said his team wasn't able to establish the run or the stop the run in the first game, so plenty of practice time was spent toward rectifying that.
Holsclaw said he saw too many missed tackles.
The season is still early enough that Holsclaw doesn't want his team getting too caught up in many things other than fixing their own mistakes. He believes if they do that and "take care of the process," the wins will come.
"We met the enemy, and the enemy is us," Holsclaw said. "We've got to take care of our business. Let's not worry so much about who we're playing other than us. We've got guys that are huge question marks. They didn't play real well when the lights got turned on. We've got another opportunity this week."
