Playing in its first ever G-MAC game in program history the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team knocked off Ohio Valley 81-73 on Thursday night in Owensboro, Ky. The Panthers improved to 5-2 overall, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 3-6 overall.
Junior
Jordanne Gambill put KWC ahead 2-0 on a layup, but the Fighting Scots responded with a three pointer at the 19:23 mark.
The two teams exchanged baskets until Ohio Valley took a four point lead on a jumper to put the score at 14-10 with 13:43 remaining in the game. Freshman
Erin Dorn tied the score at 14 apiece after converting on a jumper and a layup.
The Panthers took their largest lead of the half at the 2:20 mark on a made layup by Gambill, who put the score at 32-29.
Ohio Valley pulled within one following two made free throws, but senior
Kourtney Rhoads put KWC back up three on a jumper, making it a 34-31 game with 1:02 remaining in the half.
The Panthers went into halftime leading 37-35 following a made three pointer by senior
Karly Rhoads as time expired.
KWC shot 48 percent from the field during the first 20 minutes of play and converted on all of four of its free throw attempts.
The Fighting Scots made 42 percent of its shots from the field and went 4-6 from the stripe.
Ohio Valley tied the score at 37 all to start the second half.
KWC used a 7-0 run to go up 48-41 with 16:25 remaining in the game.
The Fighting Scots used a 6-0 run to pull within one of the Panthers, making it a 52-51 game with 11:40 on the clock.
Ohio Valley took its final lead of the game at the 5:44 hitting a layup to put the score at 64-63. The Panthers scored the next eight points to take a 71-64 lead with 2:50 remaining in the game.
The Fighting Scots pulled within four on a couple of occasions, but Ohio Valley was unable to get any closer and KWC ended the game with its largest lead taking the game 81-73.
The Panthers ended the game shooting 48 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line, while converting on 5-14 three point attempts.
Gambill and senior
Shelbi Tyra each finished the game with 21 points. Senior
T'Essence Phelps led the squad with eight rebounds and three steals.
Karly Rhoads ended the game with five assists.
Ohio Valley made 43 percent of its shots from the field and made 65 percent of its attempts from the stripe, while only connecting on two of 12 three point attempts.
KWC returns to action at home on Saturday, Dec. 7 against G-MAC opponent Salem International at 1 p.m.
