Kentucky Wesleyan played its first road game of the season on Wednesday night, winning over Oakland City 89-77. The Panthers are 3-0 on the season following the victory over the Lady Oaks.
Senior
Kourtney Rhoads put KWC ahead 2-0 to start the game, but Oakland City knocked down a three pointer to take the 3-2 advantage.
The Panthers went had 7-3 following a made free throw by senior
T'Essence Phelps at the 17:39 mark. Oakland City scored the next seven points to go ahead 10-7.
Ko. Rhoads gave KWC its third lead of the second half after hitting a jumper with 12:16 remaining in the half to put the score at 14-13.
Less than two minutes later the Lady Oaks regained the lead on a layup, making it a 17-15 game.
Neither team was able to go ahead by more than six points the remainder of the half.
Sophomore
Jade Mills-Harris converted on a layup scoring the final basket of the first 20 minutes of play, giving the Panthers the 42-40 lead heading into halftime.
During the first 20 minutes of play there were 14 lead changes and seven ties. KWC shot 58% from the floor and 67% from the free throw line in the first half, while Oakland City shot 34% from the field and hit all eight of its free throw attempts.
Senior
Karly Rhoads put the Panthers ahead 55-50 with 14:40 remaining in the game.
The Panthers built a 10 point advantage with 9:30 remaining in the ball game following a three pointer by Ka. Rhoads.
KWC went up by 16 on a layup by junior
Jordanne Gambill, who put the score at 83-67 with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
Oakland City wasn't able to pull within single digits during the remainder of the game and Gambill scored the final basket with 15 second remaining to put the final score at 89-77.
The Panthers shot 61% from the floor and 61% from the free throw line for the game. Oakland City hit 41% of its shots from the floor and 77% from the free throw line.
Phelps recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She also had five assists along with Ka. Rhoads. Senior
Shelbi Tyra posted a team high 21 points.
KWC returns to the road on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Southern Indiana. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. CT at PAC Arena.
