Quincy University's football team rolled into Kentucky Wesleyan College with a 1-5 record on Saturday afternoon, but the Hawks departed with a 54-point victory.
Amassing 707 yards of total offense, including a whopping 543 in the first half, Quincy routed winless KWC 80-26 in a lopsided Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Steele Stadium.
"This is about as frustrated as we've been here," said veteran Panthers head coach
Brent Holsclaw. "We're very embarrassed, very disappointed.
"I take full responsibility. Right now, the kids are just not responding. Hopefully, next week we'll play much harder."
Quincy (2-5, 1-2 GLVC) roared to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and led 49-13 by intermission, having limited Kentucky Wesleyan (0-7, 0-3) to only yard rushing.
The Hawks hurt the Panthers in the first half on the ground behind Dante Flowers, who had scoring runs of 17 and 46 yards, and through the air, with quarterback Nick Lonergan connecting for two touchdown passes to Justin Dickens, and also tossing a scoring aerial to Leon Spears.
KWC's first-half scoring came on two Will Barnes TD passes -- 51 yards to Jeff Ward and 14 yards to Keelan Cole.
Jared King scored his second and third rushing touchdowns to open the third quarter for Quincy, which continued to dominate the action — taking a 73-20 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
The Panthers' second-half scoring came on an 11-yard pass from Barnes to Martez Sivils and Dalton Oliver's 17-yard pass to Larry Robinson.
KWC finished with 331 yards of total offense and was led by Barnes, who completed 20-of-31 passes for 202 yards and three TDs, with one interception. Barnes was sacked four times.
Quincy ruled the ground game, finishing with 437 yards rushing compared to a meager 53 for Wesleyan.
"When you're not running the ball well and you're not stopping the run," Holsclaw said, "this kind of thing happens."
Lonergan was 13-of-16 for 270 yards and three TDs for the Hawks, whose top receiver was Dickens (7 receptions, 181 yards, 2 TDs). King (146) and LeDarion Shelby (104) each topped 100 yards rushing for Quincy.
KWC returns to action at 6 p.m. on Saturday when it visits Indianapolis.
