Panthers complete GLVC road trip sweep

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College got contributions from a variety of sources Saturday in finishing up the sweep of its Great Lakes Valley Conference road trip.

The No. 7 Panthers upended Saint Joseph's 81-75 at Rensselaer, Ind., giving KWC coach Todd Lee his first road victory of the series in eight tries.

“It's a tough place to play, and they're a physical team,” Lee said after the Panthers went to 18-3, 10-3 in the GLVC. “We did a great job from the free throw line. We found a way to win.”

The Panthers were 27-of-33 from the foul line, and they were very solid in the closing minutes, when St. Joe's made one last run back at them.

St. Joe's hit two straight 3-pointers, then a layup by Jason Chorba drew it to within four points, 79-75, with 10 seconds to go. Cornbread Walker hit two free throws with seven seconds left, giving KWC its final margin, and St. Joe's missed its last 3-point attempt of the game.

KWC was very aggressive and executed several traditional 3-point plays to keep St. Joe's at a safe distance. Anthony Young, Kreig Oxley and Brandon Johnson all converted the field goal and free throw combination in the second half.

Johnson led all scorers with 20 points. He filled his stat line with five rebounds, four assists and a steal in 31 minutes. Johnson also canned 8-of-9 free throws.

Young and Marseilles Stewart each put up a double-double for the Panthers. Young had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and went 7-of-8 from the line.Stewart had 10 points and 10 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

Both players helped KWC to a 41-31 advantage on the glass.

Oxley scored 17 points, hiting 10-of-11 free throws along the way.

“Ox had some good drives to the basket,” Lee said. “We had a bunch of guys step up and make plays.”

Travis Johnston didn't score but his nine minutes, and Luke Shelley's 11 minutes, helped provide some rest time for Johnson and Oxley. Johnston is still bothered by an ankle injury, according to Lee.

“It is a quick turnaround from Thursday to Saturday, and just to give us some minutes helped,” Lee said.

KWC needed good shooting from the foul line because it struggled from 3-point range, hitting just 2-of-14. KWC was 26-of-55 from the floor for 47 percent.

St. Joe's (7-14, 2-12) was led by Corey Clifton's 15 points. St. Joe's made 30-of-68 from the floor for 44 percent. It was 7-of-28 on 3-pointers for 25 percent.

KWC returns to action Thursday night when Lewis comes to the Sportscenter for the start of a three-game homestand.
