Kentucky Wesleyan falls to Kentucky State, 23-7

Box Score

Kentucky State had too much speed and too much presence on the defensive line for Kentucky Wesleyan College.

The Panthers scored first on Saturday night, but could not keep up with K-State, falling 23-7 at Steele Stadium.

“We're disappointed with the loss, but I thought we grew as a team in this game,” KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. “Our guys competed.”

The Panthers (0-4) appeared ready to go out of the gate, taking just three plays to get on the scoreboard first. Thomas Gordon broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead just 1:16 into the game.

“Early we were ready to go,” Holsclaw said. “We won the first round, but we knew this would be a tough, four-round fight.”

KWC was able to hold K-State's offense mostly in check the rest of the first quarter. KWC stopped a K-State drive early in the second period at the Panthers' 11, forcing K-State to settle for a 28-yard field goal with 10:56 left before halftime.

The Thorobreds finally pushed a touchdown across with 11 seconds to go in the first half on a 2-yard pass from Jerrel Noland to Raphael Amey to go up 10-7.

K-State (3-1) made two big plays to take control of the game. Jacquis Lockett broke a 49-yard touchdown run with 7:13 left in the third quarter. JacQuan Persley took a KWC fumble 65 yards for a touchdown and the 23-7 final margin. The fumble was caused by a K-State sack on KWC quarterback Chris Owen.

Owen was under constant pressure in the second half as K-State rotated defensive linemen in and out of the game. Owen was sacked three times and hurried to throw several others.

“Kentucky State kept sending fresh bodies out there on the defensive line,” Holsclaw said. “Credit them for wearing us down.”

K-State outgained KWC 392-207 in total offense. Noland hit 21-of-33 passes for 213 yards for K-State. Owen was 13-for-35 passing for 125 yards with an interception. Gordon ran 15 times for 113 yards for the Panthers.

KWC travels to Liberty on Saturday.
