Panthers look to reverse trend

Game Notes

Kentucky Wesleyan's football program will be hoping to reverse history when it plays host to Kentucky State tonight at Steele Stadium.

The Panthers are yet to win in five previous meetings with the Thorobreds, including a 30-25 loss in a 2009 meeting at Frankfort — the closest margin in the series to date.

Wesleyan comes in 0-3, but has been competitive in its last two outings — dropping a 24-17 decision at Pikeville on Sept. 10, and losing to visiting Siena Heights 28-26 a week ago.

KWC senior quarterback Chris Owen was a shining star in defeat against the Saints, earning Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after completing 21-of-30 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

For the season, Owen is 50-of-93 for 488 yards and three touchdowns, with just one interception.

Owen's favorite receiver has been Shawn Mooney, who has 16 receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown. Ta'Ron Squires has 10 catches for 85 yards and a score.

Freshman running back Brett Leary is coming off a solid game against Siena Heights, with 81 yards on 24 carries.

The Panthers' defensive unit is led by senior linebacker Ken Stoklosa (18 tackles) and junior linebacker Quadarius Wallace (16 tackles).

Kentucky State (2-1) opened with victories over Central State (39-21) and Lincoln (43-27), before tasting defeat last week against visiting Stillman (31-29).

KSU runnnig back Andrew Ramsey averaged 91 yards per game to lead a balanced ground attack, and quarterback Jarrel Noland is 39-of-59 through the air for 569 yards and three touchdowns.

The Thorobreds' primary big-play threat is wide receiver Raphael Amey, who has 13 receptions for 284 yards and a pair of TDs.

Kentucky State is averaging 362 yards of total offense per game, but is surrendering almost as much (357).

Deshon Best, who has recorded 20 tackles from his rover position, leads KSU defense.
