Late score sinks Panthers, 24-17

Box Score

Junior quarterback Trevor Hoskins hit Axxel Rivas with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 53 seconds to play to lift Pikeville to a 24-17 victory over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan in a topsy-turvy college football game Saturday night in Pikeville.

The loss drops the Panthers to 0-2 entering next Saturday's home-opener against Siena Heights.

“We're finding out who we are, and we're a very young football team,” KWC head coach Brent Holsclaw said. “Defensively, I thought we stepped up and played a stellar game against an explosive offensive football team.

“It's frustrating. We played hard, but we made too many mistakes. We have met the enemy, and the enemy is us.”

KWC opened the scoring in the first quarter when Jeff Ward intercepted a Hoskins pass and raced 95 yards for a touchdown.

Pikeville (2-0) tied the game at 7 midway through the second period when Hoskins connected with Chris Joseph on a 34-yard pass play.

Wesleyan had a chance to take a 7-point lead late in the first half, after gaining a 1st-and-goal at the Bears' 2-yard line. Four cracks at the end zone later, however, Pikeville had held, and the teams were deadlocked at intermission.

The Panthers took a 10-7 lead mdway through the third on Matt Wilson's 38-yard field goal, but the Bears answered when Hoskins hit Rivas with a 22-yard TD aerial late in the quarter.

KWC reclaimed the lead when quarterback Chris Owen hooked up with Shawn Mooney from three yards out to cap an eight-play, 65 yard drive at 9:55 of the fourth. The Panthers led 17-14.

Pikeville tied the score with four minutes to play when Grayson Quick nailed a 20-yard field goal — setting the stage for the Bears' game-winning score.

For KWC, Owen finished 14-of-31 through the air for 150 yards and a TD. Mooney caught six passes for 68 yards and a score.

Linebacker Ken Stoklosa spearheaded the Wesleyan defense with a team-best eight tackles.

“A loss like this can take something out of a team emotionally,” Holsclaw said, “and it's the job of our coaching staff to get this team up as we prepare for our first home game.”

KWC opened the season on Sept. 1 with a 41-0 loss at Indianapolis.
