Panthers unable to find shooting touch in loss to Maryville

Box Score

The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team couldn't locate its shooting touch Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers hit just 33 percent (19-of-58) of their attempts from the field in a 69-54 loss to Maryville at Moloney Arena in St. Louis.

"We didn't do a lot of things right," said KWC coach Todd Lee, whose club made 4-of-27 attempts from 3-point range (15 percent). "I wouldn't say we forced any 3s. Guys had shots. We just didn't knock them down, and you've got to step up and make shots."

While the looks were good, Lee thought his Panthers (15-6, 8-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) were too content to take 3s instead of working for higher-percentage shots.

"We shot too many and too early instead of attacking the basket," he said.

Maryville (6-15, 3-11), meanwhile, stuck with its usual plan of attack -- bombing from long range. And it proved effective, as the Saints made 12-of-25 attempts (48 percent) from behind the 3-point arch, which helped them shoot 47 percent (24-of-51) overall.

"We knew they would shoot a lot of 3s, and they shot it well," Lee said. "We didn't defend very well, and that's been a running theme this year. In the games we've lost, we haven't defended very well."

Neither team was effective in the first half, as both shot under 30 percent from the field. Still, the Panthers faced a 23-16 deficit at intermission.

While the Panthers' woes continued in the second half, Maryville caught fire, hitting 63 percent from the field, including 67 percent from 3-point range (8-of-12).

KWC's problems carried over to the foul line, with it hitting 12-of-21 attempts (57 percent). Maryville was equally poor, making 9-of-16 charity tosses (56 percent).

The Panthers were paced by Kwan Waller's 15 points. Cardell McFarland added 10 points.

KWC was effective on the boards, outrebounding Maryville 43-34 on the strength of Marseilles Stewart's game-high 10 boards and Chris Williams and Anthony Young each pulling down nine.

Maryville was led by Mike Ford and Cody Sorenson each scoring 16 points.
