McFarland delivers for Panthers

Box Score

The Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball team let a pair of 20-point leads slip away, but Cardell McFarland made sure the Panthers stayed undefeated Saturday.

McFarland's 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left to go lifted the No. 9 Panthers to a 74-71 victory over Lewis at Romeoville, Ill. The shot capped a KWC rally after the Panthers trailed by five with 1:05 remaining in the Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup.

“This team has a lot of heart,” McFarland said. He led all scorers with 28 points. “ 'Never quit.' That's got to be our new motto.”

The win capped a two-game GLVC road swing after the Panthers (6-0, 2-0) pulled out an overtime victory Thursday at Wisconsin-Parkside.

McFarland scored six of KWC's final eight points against a Lewis squad that scorched the nets from 3-point range in the second half, helping the Flyers take a 55-54 lead with 6:39 to play.

“I knew they were going to make a run,” KWC coach Todd Lee said. “They aren't going to quit. We're just lacking some depth right now and our guys are playing a lot of minutes. That's part of the issue. When we got a lead, we can't sub freely and extend it.”

The Panthers played without senior Marseilles Stewart and Travis Johnston who are injured.

McFarland hit a 3 with 57 seconds that pulled KWC within striking distance at 71-69.

Brandon Johnson then drew an offensive foul on the press when Lewis' Chris McClellan was called for a charge.

Johnson hit a layup with 43 seconds to go to tie the game at 71. Lewis couldn't convert, setting up the Panthers' final chance with 10 seconds to play.

Lewis couldn't inbound the ball after McFarland hit the shot that put KWC ahead to stay. The Panthers needed two tries to inbound the ball before getting it to Anthony Young and running out the clock.

“To be 6-0, 2-0 in the league, without one of our better players in

Marseilles Stewart says a lot about the team,” Lee said. “We are winning games and our guys aren't giving up, which is great to see.”

McClellan and Ryan Jackson led Lewis (4-2, 0-2) with 19 points each. David Bryant added 11. The Flyers shot 57 percent from 3-point range in the second half, 33 percent for the game.

Young finished with 18 points for KWC. Dominique Dawson added 10. Dawson and Young led the Panthers on the boards with eight rebounds each.

KWC shot 51.7 percent from the field, 30-for-58, and were 8-for-18 from 3-point range for 44 percent.

McFarland was 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

The Panthers have a week-long break from games before hosting Cedarville on Dec. 10.

“Even though we gave up the lead, we did stick together,” Lee said. “That was good to see. Brandon Johnson made a big play on the press. Brandon got the push off. That was a big play. That got us back in the ball game and we set everything up.”
