KWC earns first victory

Box Score

Notre Dame College didn't know what hit them on Saturday.

Kentucky Wesleyan got five touchdown passes from senior quarterback Chris Owen and forced NDC into six turnovers as the Panthers posted their first victory of the season -- a convincing 38-13 decision over the host Falcons at Korb Field in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

“This is a very big win for us,” KWC head coach Brent Holsclaw said. “I'm proud of everyone in our program because we kept pushing and stayed persistent.

“It's very rewarding because we beat a quality football team.

“We could have folded coming up here on an eight-hour bus ride and 0-9 on the season — I'm just so proud of them.”

The Falcons (5-5) jumped ahead 7-0, but the Panthers took advantage of NDC miscues to score 31 unanswered points.

KWC held a 24-7 halftime advantage.

“We didn't change our approach at that point,” Holsclaw said. “We just wanted to go back out and continue to play solid football.”

In addition to Owen, the Panthers got a huge game from Jeff Ward, who carried 34 times for 157 yards and caught four passes for 57 yards.

Owen was 18-of-27 through the air for 282 yards.

Falcons quarterback Rob Partridge, meanwhile, was 28-of-41 for 353 yards, but was picked off twice.

Kentucky Wesleyan finished with 449 yards of total offense, compared to 403 for Notre Dame College.

“We showed a lot of heart,” Holsclaw said. “It was really emotional on the sideline at the end of the game — this was a great victory for us to get.”

The Falcons' six turnovers were the most in program history, and Notre Dame College entered the game plus-three in turnovers.

The Panthers (1-9) close out the 2011 season at 1 p.m. next Saturday against William Jewell at Steele Stadium.
