Panthers' season hits high gear

Game Notes

The basketball season ratchets up a notch for the Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team tonight.

The Panthers play back-to-back games over the next two days for the first time when the John Worth Insurance/Hampton Inn Owensboro Classic opens tonight at the Sportscenter.

No. 15 Wesleyan (2-0) faces Clark Atlanta at 6 p.m. In the second game, Missouri-St. Louis faces Bloomfield at 8.

Saturday, the Panthers meets Bloomfield at 8 p.m. Missouri-St. Louis and Clark Atlanta will play in the opener at 5:30 p.m.

“I think our guys are excited to play,” KWC coach Todd Lee said. “This is more like what the rest of the season will be, playing four games in the next eight days. For teaching points … we need some games.”

The Panthers weren't tested in their first two contests, winning by a combined score of 240-140. Lee said he expects the two tournaments games to be tougher.

That will help Wesleyan get ready for a big Great Lakes Valley Conference road swing next week when the Panthers play Dec. 1 at Wisconsin-Parkside and Dec. 3 at Lewis.

But this year's group has plenty of experience back from last year despite injury troubles early this season to point guard Travis Johnston and guard Marseilles Stewart.

“We've got a good group back,” Lee said. “Our seniors have led us.

They know how tough the league is going be this year.”

Johnston hasn't worked back totally from knee surgery, Lee said. Stewart suffered a broken bone in his shooting hand, but could make his return to the lineup for Wesleyan's GLVC road trip next week.

Anthony Young, a 6-7 senior, is averaging 37.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game for KWC. Cardell McFarland, a 5-11 senior, is averaging 23.5 points.”

Dominique Dawson, a 6-8 sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn.,
is close to double figures at 9.5 points per game. He's also averaging 6.5 rebounds.

He joins Cornbread Walker, a 6-3 junior guard, and Brandon Johnson, a 5-11 senior guard, in tonight's expected starting lineup.

“Cardell and Anthony, they've provided great leadership this year,” Lee said. “Our returning players are a nice group. They know what we need to do.”

Clark Atlanta (1-3) is lead by Royce Hamilton, a 6-6 senior forward, at 13.8 points per game. Four of their five projected starters are averaging in double figures.
