KWC opens season today with Asbury

Game Notes

Like most college basketball teams starting the season, Kentucky Wesleyan College is ready to see some unfamiliar faces on the court.

The Panthers have been practicing for most of the last 12 days since a pair of exhibition games at South Carolina and then-No. 10 Pittsburgh.

They get the chance to finally see some outside competition this afternoon when Asbury visits the Sportscenter for a 3:15 p.m. tipoff.

It will be the second game of a doubleheader with KWC's women taking on Ashland at 1 p.m.

“We haven't played in awhile, and that's a concern,” KWC coach Todd Lee said.

“We're not in any kind of rhythm in terms of playing games. It's also good to have competition. Once you get into the season, you get more immediate feedback.

“You can talk to them about the things they need to improve on. You can put them on the line and make them run. But they really need somebody in a different jersey to show them they are not doing something the right way.”

Asbury will be a good opening for that learning process, and it will mark the start of a stretch of four games in eight days for the No. 15 Panthers.

“That will be good for us,” Lee said.

KWC has found more balanced scoring in practice and the exhibitions. Cardell McFarland and Anthony Young each averaged in double figures last season, with Young at 19 points and McFarland right behind at 18.

“We need Anthony to be more efficient percentage-wise, and we've told him he could average less but be a much better player,” Lee said. “We talked to him about shot selection, defense, leadership.”

Dominique Dawson, a 6-foot-8 transfer from Minnesota, and guard Brandon Johnson were good for a combined 15 points a game, and Johnson had nine assists in the two exhibition games at guard.

KWC has some injury issues with Marseilles Stewart and Travis Johnston.

Stewart will be out a couple of weeks while a broken hand heals. Johnston has had soreness in his surgically repaired knee and likely won't play in this game, Lee said.
