Game Notes

My, what a difference a week makes.

Staring down the barrel of a winless season in football, Kentucky Wesleyan put it all together in last Saturday's 38-13 victory at Notre Dame College.

Now, the Panthers (1-9) seek to close out the 2011 season with another victory as they play host William Jewell on Senior Day at Steele Stadium.

“I'm very proud of the way our football team has hung together,” KWC head coach Brent Holsclaw said. “We kept battling, and it paid off for us (last week).”

Wesleyan senior quarterback Chris Owen is coming off far and away his best outing of 2011, having riddled NDC for 282 yards through the air and five touchdown passes.

Shawn Mooney led the Panthers' receiving corps, catching five passes for 75 yards and a TD. Also catching scoring passes were Jeff Ward, Derek Brown, Jake Pepper and Jacob Anderson.

Ward, meanwhile, added significant punch to the KWC ground attack, picking up a game-best 157 yards on 34 carries.

Quadariu Wallace anchored a stingy, opportunistic Panther defense with 11 tackles. KWC came up with six Notre Dame College turnovers.

William Jewell (3-6) was headed in the wrong direction -- with a six-game losing streak — until two weeks ago, when it won 19-8 at Saint Joseph's. The Cardinals followed that up with a 52-24 home conquest of Culver Stockton a week ago.

The youth-laden Cards primarily rely on the talents of 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore quarterback Sean Shelton, who has passed for 1,434 yards and nine touchdowns, with 16 interceptions. Shelton also leads the team in rushing with 393 yards and four touchdowns.

William Jewell's most dangerous receiver is Jon Molzen, a 6-4 junior who has 43 receptions for 510 yards and five touchdowns.

The Cardinals also possess an excellent kicking game, spearheaded by sophomore place-kicker Warren Frevert, who has drilled seven field goals in nine attempts.
