Mendenhall leads Urbana past Panthers

Box Score

DJ Mendenhall threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Urbana (Ohio) rolled over host Kentucky Wesleyan 45-9 in a college football game Saturday afternoon at Steele Stadium.

The loss dropped KWC to 0-6, and left veteran head coach Brent Holsclaw wondering about his team's commitment.

“It's real frustrating, and this is a very embarrassing loss,” Holsclaw said. “I feel like in the third quarter most of our guys quit, and I'm very concerned that some of these guys have given up.

“We lack leadership when the chips are down. I take full responsibility for what's going on here, and we're going to address the issues we need to address to get this thing straightened out.”

KWC was competitive for a quarter.

The Blue Knights (3-3) struck first, with Mendenhall connecting with LaVelle Spivey for a 3-yard TD pass at 4:05 of the first period.

The Panthers bounced right back, though, with Chris Owen hitting Jake Pepper with a 54-yard scoring pass that pulled KWC within 7-6.

It was all Urbana, however, thereafter.

Mendenhall hit Spivey for another touchdown pass, before scoring on a 5-yard run as the Blue Knights took control of the contest in the second quarter.

Matt Wilson drilled a 28-yard field goal at 1:15 to pull Wesleyan within 21-9 at intermission.

Another Mendenhall-to-Spivey TD aerial opened the scoring in the second half, and it was followed by a 35-yard scoring pass from Mendenhall to Joe Webb.

Urbana added a field goal and a 55-yard TD sprint by David Hill in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

The Blue Knights dominated on the ground, out-gaining the Panthers 226-44. The Blue Knights accumulated 26 first downs to just 13 for KWC.

Mendenhall was 24-of-32 through the air for 294 yards with four TDs and an interception.

Owen, facing fierce pressure throughout, finished just 10-of-27 for 113 yards with a TD and two interceptions. Backup Will Barnes was 9-of-19 for 93 yards.

Kentucky Wesleyan returns to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday when it hosts Missouri S&T at Steele Stadium.
