KWC falls to 0-7 after 52-28 loss

Box Score

Missouri S&T got three touchdowns runs each from Curterris Golden and Ryan Taylor on the way to a 52-28 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in a college football game Saturday afternoon at Steele Stadium.

The loss drops the Panthers to 0-7 on the season and 0-8 all-time versus the Miners, who improved to 4-3 this fall.

“Quite frankly, we're just not a very good football team,” conceded ninth-year KWC head coach Brent Holsclaw. “We have maybe eight guys who should be playing (NCAA) Division II football, and it shows.

“On a positive note, we scored 28 points. But, defensively we really did not play a good game today.”
Wesleyan hung tough for a quarter, with Golden's 2-yard TD run being the only score.

In the second period, however, the Miners began to assert themselves, with Taylor scoring on a 35-yard run and Golden scoring from 22 yards out.

The Panthers trimmed their deficit to 21-7 on a 4-yard scoring pass from Chris Owen to Jake Pepper inside the final minute of the half, but Adam Peden's 45-yard field goal at 0:05 left the Miners with a comfortable 24-7 halftime advantage.

Wesleyan scored three second-half touchdowns -- Shawn Mooney catching a 6-yard pass from Owen; Owen scoring on a 1-yard run; and Orrin Petermen scoring on a 5-yard run -- but it wasn't nearly enough.

Missouri S&T punished the KWC defense with 305 yards rushing. Taylor had 117 yards on only 14 carries, and Golden finished with 95 yards on 19 carries.

KWC's ground game was virtually non existent, as the Panthers picked up a mere 21 yards on 15 attempts.

Owen finished 27-of-51 through the air for 231 yards with two TDs and three interceptions.

S&T had 427 yards of total offense, compared to just 252 for the Panthers.

KWC returns to action next Saturday with a visit to Saint Joseph's (Ind.).
