The Kentucky Wesleyan College football team steps up in class tonight when it visits Lynchburg, Va., to tangle with the Liberty Flames, an NCAA Division I representative of the Football Championship Series (formerly NCAA I-AA).
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Williams Stadium.
The Panthers (0-4) are coming off a 23-7 home loss to Kentucky State last Saturday.
One of the bright spots for KWC was the performance of running back
Thomas Gordon, who rushed for a game-best 113 yards on 15 carries, and scored the Panthers' lone touchdown on a 55-yard run early in the first period.
Wesleyan will be looking for a bounce-back performance, however, from veteran quarterback
Chris Owen, who completed only 13-of-35 passes for 125 yards with one interception against the Thorobreds. Owen also was sacked three times.
Liberty, despite its 1-3 record, features a high-powered offensive attack. The Flames are averaging 280 yards per game through the air, and 104 more on the ground.
Flames quarterback Mike Brown has completed 84-of-128 passes for 1,083 yards and seven touchdowns, with six interceptions. His top receiving threat is Chris Summers, who has 26 receptions for 398 yards and four TDs.
Brown also leads Liberty's running game, with 219 yards on 67 carries and three touchdowns.
