Kentucky Wesleyan looking to rebound after tough losses

Game Notes

Coach Brent Holsclaw is trying to keep the Kentucky Wesleyan College football team on an upward path despite four straight losses.

At least two of those games, a 43-35 loss last week to St. Joseph's and a 38-35 overtime defeat at Missouri S&T the week before, were quite winnable for the Panthers.

"We could be sitting here 6-3, if you count the Urbana game," Holsclaw said. "We're fighting the mental part and the emotional part of it. They were down after that, and they're still down. They're fighting through two tough, emotional losses."

The Panthers (3-5) have a chance to heal themselves with Miles College coming to Steele Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest today. Miles is 3-6 and looks like an even match with the Panthers.

Holsclaw is more concerned with how his team is doing, and that is no disrespect to the visitors from Fairfield, Ala.

"Miles is a formidable opponent, but I'm more concerned about our guys," Holsclaw said. "We're fighting the mental and emotional part of it."

Miles will be a challenge for the Panthers with how much it can throw at them from formations and what it likes to do with the ball, on defense and special teams.

"They present a lot on the scheme side, with the amount of things they do," Holsclaw said. "They've got some weapons, and they've played a rough schedule."

Senior quarterback Carlton Hill is a 6-foot-3, 208-pound senior who transferred from South Florida. He has thrown for 1,429 yards on 123-of-247 passes for nearly a 50-percent completion rate. He's throw nine touchdowns and has been intercepted eight times. Breante Allen and Gerard Berton have each caught more than 300 yards worth of passes.

KWC will counter with Chris Owen, who has hit 191-of-323 passes (59.1 percent) for 2,382 yards, and 23 touchdowns, with seven interceptions. Owen has fought a knee injury all season and a badly cut finger against S&T.

DaMarcus Ganaway has been the go-to receiver for the Panthers, catching 58 passes for 942 yards and nine touchdowns. David Smith has made 42 catches for 558 yards.

Mainly, the Panthers need to remember how they got leads against S&T and St. Joe's, and this time finish the deal.

"I think we've learned a lot of lessons the last three weeks," Holsclaw said. "When we're up, we've got to take the fight to our opponents."
