KWC faces tough test vs. OVC member Murray

KWC faces tough test vs. OVC member Murray

Kentucky Wesleyan College will go into its second difficult game in as many weeks when it travels to Murray State tonight for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Stewart Stadium.

Murray is a longtime member of the Ohio Valley Conference and in the Football Championship Subdivision. That means more scholarships and more athletes going against the Panthers.

"We've got a tough one against a D-I school," KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. "If we can establish the running game and play good defense, we can be in it. That's easier said than done. We've got a huge challenge ahead of us. We can't afford to get field goals blocked for touchdowns."

That happened against Indianapolis in a 31-3 loss last Thursday night.

The blocked field goal came with 3:49 left, and it was returned 79 yards for Indy's final score of the night.

KWC also got to the Indy 27 and was in position to potentially cut the Greyhounds' lead to 17-10 when a drive stalled with three incomplete passes by Chris Owen.

"Our quarterback had a bad game, he missed some throws he usually makes," Holsclaw said. "But our defense made some incredible stops."

KWC suffered a few minor injuries in the game. Most dinged up players will try to go, like offensive tackle Chuck Palonis, who has an injured shoulder.

The Panthers will need all of their offensive line at full strength to slow down defensive end Austen Lane. He is a 6-foot-7, 270-pound senior who is being projected on some NFL Draft lists for 2010.

The Panthers will try to rely on Thomas Gordon to get them going on the ground. Gordon finished with 102 yards on 19 carries against Indianapolis. They could only get 66 yards through the air.

Holsclaw has tried to get his team to get past the Indy game so it can focus on the significant challenge presented by the Racers.

"We're still encouraged," Holsclaw said. "It's unfortunate things fell apart for us in the fourth quarter, but we can't sit here and cry about it. It's over. We've got to go play Murray State."
