Panthers knock off Aces in exhibition

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College earned a tough 55-52 win over the University of Evansville in an exhibition basketball game on Saturday night at Roberts Stadium.

The Panthers made five of their last six free throws to secure the victory in their second exhibition matchup against an NCAA Division I school in three days.

Andree' Wilson hit 1-of-2 free throws to give KWC a 53-49 advantage after rebounding a UE missed free throw by Bryan Bouchie with 35 seconds to play.

UE cut the advantage to 53-52 on a Bouchie traditional 3-point play with 24 seconds left.

Two more free throws by Maros Zuffa with 11 seconds left gave KWC a 55-52 lead.

The Aces' Colt Ryan missed a 3-pointer with three seconds left. Wilson pulled in the rebound, allowing the Panthers to escape.

"The good thing for us was they took the lead on us a couple of times in the second half, and we came back and made some big shots," KWC coach Todd Lee said. "The biggest thing was we made plays down the stretch."

One of the most amazing statistics from the game was that KWC shot only 26 percent from the floor (15-of-57) and just 18 percent in the second half (5-of-28) and still won.

"I don't know if I've ever seen that before," Lee said. "We got up more shots because they had more turnovers (22-13)."

The Panthers also made their free throws, hitting 19-of-22 from the stripe. UE outrebounded KWC 41-38.

The Panthers managed a 13-point lead in the first half and controlled tempo much of the game.

"It probably helped us playing a team like Evansville, which is more of a half-court team," Lee said. "They've got a young group and a bunch of new guys. I appreciated (UE head coach) Marty (Simmons) having us over."

Marico Stinson led the Panthers with 19 points. Chris Williams added 13 and Desmond Stephens 10.

Bouchie was the only double-figure scorer for UE with 16 points.

The Panthers are 2-1 after playing in the Disney West Tip-Off Classic last weekend. They have one more exhibition game, at Purdue on Monday, then get an eight-day break before their regular season resumes.

"We've got some things to work on," Lee said. "We've got to sustain offense better, and we've got to get some inside scoring."
