KWC hosts Miners in season finale

Kentucky Wesleyan is ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II in pass defense, but the Panthers will be severely tested through the air today when Missouri S&T invades Steele Stadium for a Great Lakes Football Conference game.

"They pass the ball a lot, and they pass it well," KWC head coach Brent Holsclaw said of the Miners. "It will be an interesting game in that regard -- their passing attack against our defense; the strengths of both teams.

"Through the years, S&T has sort of had our number. We'd like to turn it around and go to 3-1 in conference play. If we could do it, this would be a big victory for the program."

The Panthers (2-8, 2-1 GLFC) are coming off a 21-6 league victory at Lincoln, which provides Holsclaw with some encouragement for his team's season-ender.

"Our offense is coming around some here late in the season," he said. "We need to see that trend continue against Missouri S&T. They're a quality, well-coached football team, and we'll need to be at our best to have a chance to win."

The Miners (3-7, 1-1) were injury-riddled early in the season. Since becoming healthy around midseason, however, Missouri S&T has won three of four games.

Senior quarterback Jason Schlueter has enjoyed a stellar season for S&T, connecting on 224-of-352 passes for 2,353 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Miners' ground game is headed by Bobby Pettis, who averages 7.8 yards per carry.

Junior quarterback Vincent Lalonde leads the Wesleyan offense. Against Lincoln, he completed 11-of-19 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 74 yards and a score.

Defensively, KWC is paced by junior linebacker David James, who averages 10.3 tackles per game to rank 20th among D-II players.
