No. 7 Purdue runs past Wesleyan, 74-52

Robbie Hummel scored 14 points to help No. 7 Purdue beat Kentucky Wesleyan College 74-52 on Monday night in the final exhibition game for both teams.

Freshman Patrick Bade scored 12 points and Ryne Smith added 10 for the Boilermakers, who open regular-season play Friday against Cal State Northridge.

"Hummel is 6-8 at the four (power forward) and he can really shoot the ball," KWC coach Todd Lee said.

Kwan Waller scored 16 points for Kentucky Wesleyan, which was coming off a 55-52 win over NCAA Division I Evansville on Saturday.

KWC guard Marico Stinson, a transfer from Indiana State who scored 24 points in a win over Purdue in 2006, was held to seven points on 3-of-10 shooting.

This was the third game in five days against Division I opponents for the Panthers. That grind started to show against Purdue.

"We're not in very good condition," Lee said. "There are some things you do differently when you play so early. You don't spend as much time conditioning because you have games. I told the guys we're going to run after practice and get in shape."

The Panthers will take today and possibly Wednesday off before they begin practicing again.

"We've got one game in the next 13 days, we've got to get back in the gym and go to work," Lee said.

Going through this stretch will certainly help the Panthers over the stretch of the season. KWC also played at South Carolina.

"We're not going to see teams like that in our league," Lee said. "All of them pressured us and tried to get us out of our offense. We learned that unless we sustain our offense, we're not going to get the shots we want."

After falling behind 12-8 midway through the first half, the Boilermakers responded with an 18-0 run to lead 26-12 with 5:19 left in the half. The Boilermakers held the Panthers without a field goal for a 7-minute stretch in the first half.

The Panthers made 16-of-53 shots from the field for 30 percent. They were 7-of-24 from 3-point range for 29 percent. They also hit 13-of-16 free throws.

Purdue shot 52 percent in the second half (15-of-29) and made 26-of-57 for 45.6 percent for the game.

KWC stayed within 12 points of the Boilermakers until the last eight minutes of the game.

"I felt like we played with them for awhile," Lee said. "We gained some confidence beating Evansville, then coming up here."

Desmond Stephens only played 18 minutes in the game because he was cramping up and he was having trouble with his hamstrings.

"I didn't want to take a chance on him getting injured," Lee said.

The Panthers will open up the home portion of their regular-season schedule on Nov. 17 when Hannibal-LaGrange comes to the Sportscenter.
