Panthers hoping to break free from offensive rut

The Kentucky Wesleyan College football team is stuck in an offensive rut and the Panthers will continue to look for answers when they take on Lake Erie at noon today in Painesville, Ohio.

KWC's defense produced the lone touchdown in a loss last week at Saint Joseph's. The Panthers were held to 14 yards rushing.

Coach Brent Holsclaw said the Panthers will stick with the option offense under wide receiver-turned-quarterback Vince Lalonde.

They'll continue to use David Howard some under center for a more conventional look, but the emphasis in practice has been stripping down the offense to the basics, much like KWC used at the beginning of the year.

"Last week was just a bad game," Holsclaw said. "We're struggling right now."

Opposing defenses lining up with a three-man front, as Lake Erie (6-3) does, have caused the most trouble for KWC this year. The linemen have been able to jam the line of scrimmage, leaving the linebackers unblocked, Holsclaw said.

That defensive formation is also suited to running stunts and blitzes, which have also caused problems for the offense.

"We're going back to our base stuff," Holsclaw said, "and our base pass package. I think the timing has a lot do with it. We're trying to get David in there and get him some game experience and run the Wildcat with Vincent Lalonde."
