Roy Pickerill is in his 10th year at Kentucky Wesleyan College as Sports Information Director Emeritus, Special Assistant for College Relations, and Archivist in 2026-27. He retired as the Panther’s Sports Information Director after 30 years, as the longest tenured SID in KWC history in 2016.
He has been with the College for fifty-six consecutive years including four as a student and twelve seasons as Assistant SID before his promotion in July 1988. He also served as Director of Public Relations for two years from 2004 to 2006.
Pickerill has been enshrined into six Hall of Fames in his career.
In 2024, he was inducted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame as chosen by the Kentucky sports broadcasters and sports writers. Pickerill is the sixth member from Kentucky Wesleyan to go into the Hall of Fame.
College Sports Communicators (CSC) inducted him into their Hall of Fame in June 1999. Pickerill also received the prestigious CSC Warren Berg Award, presented to a college division member (D2, D3, NAIA) in June 1998.
CSC presented him with the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
His publications have won 30 CSC awards including ten “Best in the Nation”. He also served on the CSC Board of Directors from 1998 to 2000.
The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) enshrined him into their Hall of Fame in 2008 and presented him with GLVC’s Thomas Kearns Distinguished Service Award in 2014. He served as the league’s SID from 1980 to 1983.
Pickerill was a finalist for the NCAA Division II’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Gold Award in 2024. He also has been a speaker and panelist at many CSC and NCAA conventions.
The NCAA honored him with the Golden Credential Award for his 30 years of service to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship Media Coordination staff in March 2025.
The Division II Sports Information Director honored him as inaugural recipient of the D2SIDA Roy Pickerill Distinguished Service Award in 2022. He became the first President of D2SIDA (281 members) for three years from 2006 to 2009.
Small College Basketball (SCB) presented him with the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. Pickerill also serves on the SCB Foundation Board of Directors.
KWC inducted him into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. He received KWC’s Outstanding Staff Member Award in 2004 and the All-American Booster Club Athletic Excellence Award in 1996.
The KWC Alumni Association voted to rename the Alumni Service Award in his honor in 2021. He received the first Alumni Service Award in 1994 and the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2007.
His alma mater Louisville Western High School inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2026.
He also has worked on the media operations staff for other events, including the College Baseball World Series, Kentucky Derby, NCAA Basketball Championships, PGA, and Senior PGA Championships.
Pickerill graduated from KWC in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His wife Margaret is a native of Pittsburgh, and a 1975 graduate of KWC.
