FINDLAY, OH – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team open Great Midwest action against the University of Findlay on Saturday. The Oilers took advantage of a throwing error to win game one 11-1. In day's second game, the Panthers fell 4-1 despite a strong performance from
Ethan Ell.
In what seemed to be a pitcher's dual, the Oliers distanced the Panthers in the late innings thanks to a throwing error. In the fourth inning, Findlay struck first with a lead-off double. The early extra base hit turned into a run after a bunt and ground out.
Evan Oakley threw-up another zero in the fifth, but in the sixth the Oilers busted the game open with four runs.
With runners on first and second to start the inning, a throwing error turned into a run for the Oilers. Findlay would add three more in the frame to take a 5-0 lead.
Michael Chaney opened the seventh with a solo shot over the left-field fence to get Wesleyan on the board 5-1. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Oilers added three more runs to build an 8-1 lead.
After three runs in the bottom of the eighth the Oilers ended the game.
Rhett Dysholm finished the game two for three with a double.
In game two, the Oilers scored three in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. A two-run double in the frame proved to be the big blow of the innings. The Panthers bounced right back in the top of the fourth as
Ellis Hurt led-off the inning with a homerun over the leftfield fence.
Wesleyan loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but could not find that two-out hit to narrow the gap. Findlay added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to build a 4-1 lead.
Ell completed five innings, allowing four runs, three earned on four hits with seven strikeouts. Dysholm finished the game two for three with a double.
The Panthers will have two more games against the Oilers on Sunday. First pitched is scheduled for 12PM CT.
