Wesleyan Completes Season Sweep of Ashland, 70-65

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team (14-7, 10-5 G-MAC) downed Ashland 70-65 Saturday afternoon, completing the program's first-ever season sweep of the Eagles.

The first quarter was neck-and-neck throughout. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-5 advantage not even four minutes into the game, but the Panthers fought right back. Vilborg Jonsdottir drove for a layup in the final seconds to give Wesleyan a 19-17 lead headed into the second.

The second quarter was even tighter than the first as both defenses picked up. Myah Montgomery hit two three-pointers in the frame and Lily Hoagland added one of her own as the two teams headed into the half tied 32-32.

The Eagles (12-9, 8-7 G-MAC) began the second half on a 14-5 run to take the game's largest lead at 46-37. Wesleyan immediately responded with a 8-2 burst to end the third quarter, highlighted by a Riley Neal three-pointer and layups by Emma Bruwer and Iratxe Amorrortu Sainz, to cut their deficit to 48-45  headed into the final period.

Wesleyan took their first lead of the second half at 59-57 midway through the fourth after Neal scored five consecutive points as part of KWC's game-sealing 10-3 run. Free throws by Neal, Montgomery, and Amorrortu Sainz solidified the Panthers 70-65 road victory.

Neal totaled 23 points and seven rebounds on 8-11 shooting from the field. Bruwer (11 points, two steals) and Montgomery (10 points, four rebounds) joined her in double digits.

The Panthers are next set to battle Malone, who received votes in the latest WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, on Thursday, February 12th, inside the Owensboro Sportscenter. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM and fans can watch live on FloCollege and listen on 94.7 WBIO.
