Wesleyan Drops First Two in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team (1-5, 0-0 G-MAC) was defeated in both games of today's doubleheader versus Miles College.

It was the first of three doubleheaders from Friday-Sunday as part of the Sam Baldwin Memorial Invitational hosted by Alabama-Huntsville.

In the first game, the Golden Bears (5-3, 0-0 SIAC) offense got going early. Miles scored four runs in the second and two in the third, and the Panthers couldn't quite recover.

Wesleyan's lone run came in the bottom of the third. Lauren Pellerito worked a leadoff walk and Riley Cunningham, who totaled four hits across both games, drove Pellerito in with a double.

Miles added two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth on their way to the 9-1 victory.

The second game began similarly as the Golden Bears opened the contest with two runs in the first and one in the second.

KWC got two runs back in the bottom of the third. Cunningham launched a solo home run for Wesleyan's first run, then the Panthers followed with multiple strong at-bats to score a second run. Bailey Markus recorded a single, Paige Crain walked, and Kennedy Matheis worked her own walk to load the bases. Chloe Apple was then hit by a pitch to allow Markus to score, but that was all Wesleyan could get across the plate in the inning.

That 3-2 score held until the top of the fifth, in which Miles scored four runs to take firm control of the game. Those runs would be the final ones scored in the game as the Golden Bears prevailed 7-2.

Wesleyan is right back at it for another doubleheader tomorrow, this time versus Shorter College. First pitch is set for 11:00 AM.
