Panthers Fall In Top G-MAC Showdown

OWENSBORO, KY – Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball (10-4, 6-2 G-MAC) battled against Northwood (11-5, 7-1 G-MAC) for the top spot in the G-MAC conference. Both squads entered today's game with a 6-1 conference record, yet the Panthers came up short 77-65.

Sophomore Emma Bruwer put up a monster game today, recording a career-highs in points (26), field goals made (10), and three-pointers made (6).

After the Timberwolves raced out to a 5-0 lead to begin the contest, Georgia Acompanado and Carson Sisk each converted in the lane to cut the early lead to one. Later in the quarter, Wesleyan found themselves trailing 17-6 after a large Northwood run. Bruwer took it upon herself to score five quick points to cut the NU lead to single digits at the end of the quarter.

Ricky Kapteijn drilled a three to cap off a 7-0 Panther run to make the score 20-18. Northwood finished the first half on a 7-2 run to extend their lead again to 11. Acompanado drained a half-court heave at the halftime buzzer, yet it was deemed no good after further review.

Bruwer scored eight straight points out of halftime to keep Wesleyan in the equation. The game was a track meet throughout as the Panthers raced on a 9-2 run to come within striking distance once again. Yet another Northwood triple made the score 53-42 entering the final period.

KWC fought hard in the fourth, as Bruwer made three triples in the quarter alone, slashing the lead to just six points. The Timberwolves then led a 7-0 run with under three minutes remaining, putting the game out of reach and claiming the top spot in the conference.

Bruwer recorded six rebounds and three assists to go along with her game-high 26 points. Acompanado continued her impressive play, finishing with nine points and five assists. Avah Montgomery scored eight points while Kapteijn added seven. Vilborg Jonsdottir dished out four assists.

Wesleyan will look to get back on track next week on the road, traveling to Malone on January 15th and Walsh on January 17th.
