Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team defeated Kentucky State 10-1 on Thursday afternoon at Foster Field.
After the Game 1 victory, Game 2 was rained out in the fourth inning and ruled a No Contest.
The Panthers had one of their best offensive innings of the season to begin Game 1. Augusta Garr singled up the middle and stole second before Cam Mann singled to left field to drive in Garr. Lexie Onyett followed with a walk, Chloe Apple worked her own walk, and Guinny Garr was hit by a pitch that allowed Mann to score. Next, Grace Colvin singled to center field to drive in Onyett, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Wesleyan didn't stop there. Hannah Beasley followed with another single to drive in Apple and Immi Mann next hit a 2-RBI double to score two more Panthers, stretching the advantage to 6-0. Finally, Gus Garr grounded out but drove in Beasley for the inning's final run as Wesleyan led 7-0 after the first frame.
Behind Immi Mann's strong performance (W, 5.0 IP, 7 SO) on the mound, the Panthers controlled the game the rest of the way. In the top of the third, after Beasley singled to lead off the inning, Mann helped her own effort with a two-run home run, her second of the season, to increase the lead to 9-0.
The Thorobreds tacked one run on in the top of the fourth, but the Panthers got it right back in the bottom half. Onyett doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a Colvin sacrifice fly to put Wesleyan up 10-1. Immi Mann put Kentucky State down in order in the top of the fifth, forcing the run rule into effect to finalize the Panthers' victory.
Wesleyan is right back to it this Saturday vs. Northwood in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at Foster Field.
