Panthers Earn Series-Opening Triumph Over Falcons

Morgantown, W. Va. – The Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team went out ahead early on their way to a series-opening 7-4 win over Fairmont State on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers (7-5) got the scoring started in the top of the second. Tate VanHooser singled and stole second to lead off the frame and both Elijah Stockton and Logan Molnar worked walks to load the bases. With one out, Liam Hutson came through with a bases-clearing double to put Wesleyan on top 3-0. Jase Mizell followed with an RBI single through the right side to drive in Hutson, increasing the Panthers lead to 4-0.

Wesleyan ace Evan Oakley (W, 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 SO) kept Fairmont State (3-5) at bay, allowing just one run in the second and another run in the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, the Panthers offense provided more insurance for their ace. Rhett Dysholm and Braden Vinyard delivered back-to-back doubles with one out to put another run on the board, and later, VanHooser knocked another double to get Vinyard across the plate as Wesleyan took a 6-2 advantage.

Josh Tucker (S, 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 SO) appeared in relief in the top of the seventh and kept the Falcons offense quiet before the Panthers added one final run on a chaotic wild-pitch sequence in the top of the eighth. Tucker pitched the final two frames as well, earning his first save of the season as Wesleyan prevailed 7-4.

Mizell, Hutson, Dysholm, and VanHooser all had multi-hit days for the Panthers, with Dysholm's three hits leading the way. The latter three, as well as Vinyard and Stockton, each recorded a double in the game as well.

The Panthers are back at it tomorrow, Saturday, March 8 for a 7-inning doubleheader against the Falcons. First pitch to begin the two games is set for 11:00 AM in Morgantown.
