MIDLAND, MI. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Northwood University on Friday. The Timberwolves escaped both contests to remain unbeaten in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Wesleyan made a late inning comeback in the first contest, but fell 3-2. In the second game, the Panthers suffered a similar fate, dropping the game 7-4.
An unearned run was the only blemish for the reigning Great Midwest Pitcher of the Week,
Isaac Rose. Northwood scored a lone run in the bottom of the first inning and hung-on to that slim margin until the bottom of the fifth when a solo homerun extended the lead to 2-0.
Jase Mizell led off the sixth with a single and after
Rhett Dysholm was hit by a pitch.
Reece Davis followed with a bunt single that loaded the bases with no-outs. A short fly-out by
Tate VanHooser and line out by
Cade Gudalis quickly got the Timberwolves one out away from ending the threat. A fielding error on
Braden Vinyard's grounder allowed two runs to score, tying the game.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Timberwolves loaded the bases and ended the game with a sacrifice fly. Rose went six innings, allowing two runs, one unearned on seven hits with six strikeouts. Davis finished the game with two for three with a double.
The Panthers started game two with back-to-back singles. Dysholm followed with a triple to give Wesleyan an early 2-0 lead. The Timberwolves answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Vinyard drove in a run in the fourth with a single to left, getting the Panthers one run closer. Wesleyan then tied the game with an unearned run in the sixth. The momentum was short lived as the Timberwolves took advantage of miscues by the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs.
Wesleyan got the tying run to the plate in the ninth.
Liam Hutson led-off with a double, but was tagged out at third trying to stretch it into a triple. Mizell followed with a single and Dysholm walked, however, the duo was stranded on the basepaths as a double play ended the game.
Noah Cook pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs, six earned with two strikeouts.
David Castleberry completed the final 2.2 innings allowing no runs or hits, with three strikeouts. Hutson, Mizell, and Vinyard each had two hits in the game.
The Panthers will return to Owensboro next week to host Malone. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 12:05 PM.
