Wesleyan Earns Exhibition Triumph, 84-71

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team began their season strong with an 84-71 exhibition victory over Tennessee Southern Saturday afternoon inside the Owensboro Sportscenter.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as both teams settled in. Lena Stinebrickner hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers a 16-14 advantage, but UTS tallied the final three points of the frame to lead 17-16 after one.

The Firehawks led by as much as six in the second frame, but consecutive three-pointers by Emma Bruwer and Iratxe Amorrortu Sainz gave Wesleyan momentum. Including those threes, the Panthers closed the half on a 19-6 run and took a 43-36 lead into the locker room.

Wesleyan opened the second half with a quick 9-2 run to build their advantage to 52-38, highlighted by two buckets from Myah Montgomery. The Firehawks kept battling and pulled within ten at 66-56 after logging the final five points of the third quarter.

Tennessee Southern trailed by as little as eight with just over four minutes to play, but the Panthers put the game away after another three by Stinebrickner and consecutive layups by Montgomery and Georgia Acompanado.

Montgomery finished with a team-high 19 points and four rebounds. Bruwer (13 points), Amorrortu Sainz (11 points), and Stinebrickner (10 points) joined her in double digits.

Riley Neal did a little of everything with six points, six rebounds, and six assists on the afternoon.

Wesleyan officially begins their campaign on Friday, November 14, against Missouri S&T inside the Sportscenter. Tipoff is set for 3:30 PM and the game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
