Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball team earned their sixth consecutive victory with a wire-to-wire 70-62 defeat of in-state rival Thomas More on Wednesday night inside the Sportscenter.
The Panthers never trailed on their way to improving to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the G-MAC. Thomas More fell to 12-8 overall and 7-6 in the G-MAC with the loss.
Wesleyan began the game with a quick 10-3 burst, highlighted by a thunderous dunk from Edward Jones Jr. and a three-pointer each from Logan McIntire and Kennedy Miles. The Panthers led by as much as 12 in the half after another Jones Jr. layup, but the Saints fought back to cut their deficit to six, 41-35, at the break.
In the second half, Wesleyan continued to go to what was working: Jones Jr. getting to the basket. He began with yet another driving layup and ended up hammering home two more dunks in the game.
The Panthers held a sizable 9–12 point lead for the majority of the second half, leading by as much as 15 at one point, and back-to-back buckets by Jones Jr. put the game away for good.
The senior forward finished with a career-high 26 points on a red-hot 13-17 shooting from the field. McIntire was the only other double-digit scorer with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, and Miles had a stat-sheet stuffing night with nine points, four rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
Reigning G-MAC Athlete of the Week Fatih Huyuk added eight points and five rebounds, and Kaeveon Mitchell logged four points, three rebounds, and three assists in his first start this season.
The Panthers next head to Hillsdale, Michigan, for a showdown with the Hillsdale Chargers, who Wesleyan is currently tied for second place with in the G-MAC. Tipoff is set for 2:00 PM, with the women's basketball team preceding at 12:00 PM.
