Panthers take down Walsh before falling to Ashland to close season

MASON, OH - It was a day of many emotions for the Kentucky Wesleyan Baseball team. After a heart-wrenching loss to Ashland yesterday, the Panthers faced Walsh in a win-or-go-home game at Legacy Field. There, senior Seth Wright's 11 strikeouts led them to a 9-7 win, sending them to a second matchup with Ashland later in the evening. In the nightcap, Ashland walked off Wesleyan for the third straight game to win 4-3 and advance in the tournament.

The Panthers season ends with a record of 18-32 (15-15 G-MAC).

Game One

The Panthers put the Cavaliers in a hole early in this one, scoring seven runs in the first three innings to quickly go up 7-2. During this span, Cade Gudalis, Cade Moore, Kyle Werries, and Nick Wimber each notched RBI doubles. Werries and Braden Vinyard each notched RBI's in the sixth to add a few insurance runs to Wesleyan's lead, putting the eight seeded Panthers up 9-2 over the fifth seeded Cavaliers.

Walsh attempted to mount a late comeback, scoring five runs over the final two innings, but the Panthers held on for the 9-7 victory.

Four Panthers notched multiple hits in the game, with Cade Moore leading the way by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Nick Wimber, Braxton French, and Cade Gudalis each tallied two hits in the contest. Wimber led the team with three runs scored.

Picking up the win was senior Seth Wright (4-3). Wright left it all on the field in his last career outing, as he struck out a season-high 11 batters, putting him at 250 strikeouts for his career. He also threw a career high 137 pitches in the contest. Wright finishes his career second on the Kentucky Wesleyan all time strikeout list, and his 17 wins rank sixth all time.

Game Two

Game two of the day took a little while to get going, as a long rain delay gave the Panthers a little more rest than they were expecting. Once the game started, the Panthers showed they were up to the challenge of facing nationally ranked Ashland for the sixth time this season.

Cade Moore opened the game with a big triple, and he was quickly brought home on a single from Nick Wimber. Following a Braxton French single and a groundout to advance Wimber to third, senior Kyle Werries hit a sacrifice fly to bring him home, making it 2-0 Panthers after one.

This was a pitchers dual, as Wesleyan's Isaac Rose and Ashland's Cameron Darrington each threw over 100 pitches in the contest, and allowed just six combined runs. The last of those runs was unearned, as Cade Moore took advantage of a throwing error by the second baseman in the eighth to score and tie the game up at 3-3. The Eagles showed their poise, however, as they managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth and walk off the Panthers for the third straight game, ending Wesleyan's season.

Cade Moore was on fire yet again, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Nick Wimber, Braxton French, and Gabriel Medina each notched two hits in the game.

Isaac Rose pitched possibly the best game of his career, as he allowed just three runs on four hits, all while not walking a single batter. His 11 strikeouts were a career high, surpassing his previous high of six. Josh Tucker (1-5) struck out two in the loss.

Kyle Werries finished his career with 126 RBI's, good for fifth all time in the Kentucky Wesleyan record book.

This marked Wesleyan's 10th straight trip to the G-MAC tournament. Trevecca Nazarene is the only other team who has made as many consecutive G-MAC tournaments as the Panthers.
