OWENSBORO, KY – The Kentucky Wesleyan Women's Basketball team (21-5, GMAC 16-4) picked up a hard-fought conference win against Trevecca Nazarene (17-10, GMAC 13-7) on Saturday afternoon 77-72. In their final regular season game at the Sportscenter, Wesleyan recognized five graduating seniors:
Corina Conley,
Jordyn Barga,
Emmy Ralph,
Mariah Jones, and
Jevin Shreve.
The first half was one to forget for the Panthers, as the Trojans raced out to a 14-5 lead after constructing a 10-0 run halfway through the quarter. Wesleyan trailed by 11 with under 30 seconds remaining, but consecutive three-pointers from
Sydnee Richetto and Ralph before the buzzer put the Panthers right back in it.
Richetto and Ralph ended up leading an 11-0 run all by themselves that tied the game 22-22 with 8:59 left in the second quarter.
Shaylee McDonald found Conley for a triple at the 2:49 mark, and less than a minute later, Corina returned the favor by feeding McDonald for a triple of her own. Ralph got consecutive buckets in the paint prior to halftime to extend the Panther lead to six at the break.
Conley and McDonald kept it going in the second half, fueling an 11-3 run that gave Wesleyan an 11-point lead straight out of the locker room. Although their comfortable lead was short-lived, the Trojans proceeded to go on an 11-0 run to close the quarter.
Trevecca's one-point lead entering the quarter was quickly extinguished by pull-up jumpers from McDonald and Ralph. Barga came alive soon after, scoring two big buckets inside to knot the contest at 65. With 6:05 left,
Shiya Hoosier swung it over Conley who drilled her fourth three-ball of the day. Hoosier pulled up and buried a jumper, then made a layup on the next two possessions to put the Panthers up three. Hoosier scored again with 1:52 left to put Wesleyan up five, then Richetto's free throws sealed the deal.
A high-tempo game at the Sportscenter saw five different Panthers hit double figures: Conley (14), Hoosier (14), McDonald (13), Ralph (12), and Richetto (11). Barga just missed the mark, adding nine points and six rebounds. Conley finished with a monster double-double with 14 & 11. Hoosier recorded three assists and two steals to go along with her 14 points.
Wesleyan will host the quarterfinals of the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) tournament on Tuesday, March 5
th at the Sportscenter. The Panthers are set to take on Malone University at 12 p.m.
