LEBANON, IL. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team made its first appearance in the McKendree Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Panthers fell 13-8 in the opener to Maryville before a 4-3 dramatic loss in the day's final game against McKendree.
In the day's opener the Panthers matched-up with Maryville University.
Chloe Apple started the game on the right note with a homerun over the rightfield fence.
Augusta Garr followed with a walk and later scored on
Kristyn Murphy's double into centerfield.
However, the Saints tied the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the third inning. Maryville would go around to score seven times in the frame and shut-out the Panthers in the bottom half to hold a 7-2 lead after three.
The Panthers put two runners on in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out. With one swing
Megan Matheis got the Panthers within two runs after a three-run homerun over the right centerfield fence. The Saints again bounced back and squashed another comeback with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 12-5 lead.
Megan Matheis added an RBI with a single in the sixth while Apple drove in two runs with a two-out double in the seventh. The Saints escape on the next batter by securing the final out.
Against the Bearcats, runs were tougher to come by as pitching took center stage. McKendree held a 1-0 lead after four innings.
Chloe Williams pitched 4.2 innings allowing four runs, two earned. After three runs from the Bearcats in the fifth the Panthers' face a 4-0 deficit.
Murphy got the Panthers on the board in the top of the sixth with RBI which set the stage for dramatics in the seventh. Trailing 4-1, Garr got the Panthers one run closer with a sac fly. With two runners still on base, the go ahead run came to the plate in the form of
Megan Matheis. With two down, Matheis ripped a double into left centerfield that scored Patterson, but Apple was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The Panthers will have two more games on Saturday as they conclude their stay at the McKendree Tournament. Wesleyan will match-up against Washburn and Missouri Western State. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM.
