CANTON, OH. – In recent years, one of the toughest opponents on the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball scheduled has been Malone University. On Saturday it was no different as the Panthers escaped Osborne Hall with a 72-64 overtime victory against the Pioneers.
Sydnee Richetto came off the bench to give Wesleyan 37 minutes and 19 points on six of nine shooting.
The Panthers will return home with a 15-4 record and 10-3 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Malone falls to 12-9, 8-5 in the G-MAC. Wesleyan trailed 33-31 at the break and faced a 57-54 deficit with 96 seconds left in the game. In fact the entire fourth quarter remained at a one possession game.
Emmy Ralph missed a three-point shot on the ensuing possession, but the Pioneers came up empty twice on their next trip down the floor. Ralph came down with the rebound while Richetto scored a quick lay-up with 33 seconds left on the clock, cutting the deficit to one.
A Panther foul sent the Pioneers to the foul line, but the trip came-up empty. Richetto got to the charity strip with 13 seconds left and converted her pair to give the Panthers a 58-57 lead. Erin Kaufman immediately came down the floor for a lay-up to give Malone a 59-58 advantage. In the final seconds it was
Shaylee McDonald's turn as she was fouled on her drive to the basket. McDonald split a pair to tie the game and force overtime.
It was team effort in the extra frame as four different players scored. The Panthers won the game with a 13-5 bonus period.
Shiya Hoosier opened overtime with a three while
Corina Conley blocked the Pioneers' first shot attempt. McDonald drove the lane for another lay-up to give the Panthers a quit 64-59 lead.
It was a two-point game with 1:23 left, but back-to-back jumpers from Richetto with a Malone miss in-between helped ice the game. Richetto finished with 19 points.
Jordyn Barga added 14 points and six rebounds. Conley recorded 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. McDonald also reach double-figures as she finished with 12 points.
The Panthers return home on Saturday for a match-up against Cedarville. Tip-off at the Owensboro Sportscenter is scheduled for 12PM.
