CANTON, OH -
Logan McIntire continues to hit big shots for the Panthers. Up by just two with just over two minutes remaining in the game, McIntire hit back-to-back threes to seal a 75-68 win for Wesleyan.
Originally picked to finish eighth in the G-MAC, Wesleyan now sits in second in the conference with a record of 15-6 (9-4 G-MAC). Malone falls to 10-12 (3-11 G-MAC).
This game started with a flurry of scoring, as the teams combined to hit five straight shots right off the bat. The Pioneers held on to a slim lead for the next 10 minutes, before
Kaeveon Mitchell gave the Panthers a 22-20 lead with a deep three off the pass from
Kennedy Miles.
Aleksa Rakic hit back-to-back threes a few possessions later, giving the visitors a 30-25 lead with 5:43 remaining in the first half. Late buckets from
Borja Fernandez and Miles, plus free throws from
Alex Gray and Rakic gave the Panthers a 42-32 lead at the break.
A three from Miles and five points from
Edward Jones Jr. gave the Panthers a quick 14-point (50-36) lead just a few minutes into the second half. With 8:40 remaining, Jones Jr. made a layup to keep the Panther lead at double-digits, but Malone began to creep back in it. The Pioneers went on a quick 10-2 run to make it just a two-point Wesleyan lead. That's when
Logan McIntire took over, scoring eight of Wesleyan's final 10 points to seal the seven-point victory.
The Panthers managed to put themselves in the record book this game, going 10-16 from three three-point line for a percentage of 62.5%, good for eighth all time in school history.
Helped along by their incredible shooting from behind the arc, Wesleyan went 28-53 (52.8%) from the floor. Malone was 26-63 (41.3%) from the field and 11-28 (39.3%) from behind the arc. This was not a sloppy game in the slightest, as the teams combined for just eight total turnovers.
Wesleyan was well balanced in this game, as
Logan McIntire (16),
Edward Jones Jr. (13),
Borja Fernandez (12), and
Kennedy Miles (11) all finished in double-figures. McIntire and
Alex Gray each grabbed six boards, while Fernandez dished out four assists.
Wesleyan won't play until next week Saturday when they host the red hot Cedarville Yellow Jackets. CU is the only team above the Panthers in the G-MAC standings and are currently riding a nine-game winning streak. Tipoff for the contest will be at 2:15 p.m. CT at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
