OWENSBORO, KY -
Evan Oakley and
Seth Wright each put in extremely strong pitching performances on Saturday, as both hurlers combined to allow just three runs over 14 innings of work. In the opening game, the run support wasn't there in a 1-0 loss, but a big second inning in the third game of the weekend gave Wesleyan a 7-2 victory.
PNW is now 2-1 while Wesleyan sits at 1-9.
Game One
The first game saw a pitching battle between Wesleyan's
Evan Oakley and a trio of Purdue Northwest pitchers. Just five hits were allowed in the entire game, with two coming from the Panthers and three from the Pride. The difference in the game came in the fifth inning, as after an error, a sac bunt, and a hit-by-pitch, a bunt by the Pride pushed home the only run of the game.
Kyle Werries and
Gabriel Medina were the only Panthers with hits in the game.
Evan Oakley (0-3) struck out nine and walked just two in seven innings of work.
Game Two
Seth Wright got the run support he needed early and often in game two, as the Panthers scored four runs in the second a three in the third.
Owen Stevenson opened the scoring with an RBI double, which was followed by RBI's from
Kyle LaVanchy,
Nick Wimber, and
Hunter Hyden. In the third, Stevenson took advantage of a passed ball to score, and
Braden Vinyard hit home
Braxton French to make it 6-0 Wesleyan after three.
PNW grabbed one back in the fifth, but a LaVanchy RBI to score Vinyard put the Pride's hope of a victory away.
Owen Stevenson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while
Braxton French was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Coming off an injury that has sidelined him for much of his career,
Hunter Hyden came through when he was called, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
Seth Wright went the distance, striking out seven and failing to walk a single batter in seven innings of work.
Wesleyan will look to even the weekend series tomorrow when they host the Pride at 12 p.m. at Panther Park.
