Panther soar in win over Trevecca

NASHVILLE, TN - The Panthers are dangerous, and they proved it on Thursday night. Taking on a Trevecca Nazarene team that is much improved from last year, Wesleyan ran them out of their own building, taking this one by a final score of 101-82. Three Panther's scored in double-figures, led by a career high 26 points from Alex Gray. Gray only saw the bottom of the bucket, going 8-8 from the field and 10-10 from the free throw line. Kennedy Miles, who was red hot in the first half, hit four threes and tallied a career high 24 points.

With the win, Wesleyan is now 17-6 (11-4 G-MAC), while Trevecca Nazarene falls to 14-9 (9-6 G-MAC).

Using the energy from a strong crowd, the Trojans went up on Wesleyan early, taking a 15-10 lead five minutes into the game. Without the play of Alex Gray, Wesleyan would have been in a big hole, as he scored six of the Panther's first eight points of the game. After a technical on the Trevecca bench, Gray put in two free throws to give Wesleyan their first lead of the game, 18-17. Kennedy Miles made a driving layup and Logan McIntire put down a two-handed dunk to quickly put the Panthers ahead by five. Trevecca came back to go up 24-22, before the visitors forced a timeout with a 9-0 run that was capped off by a McIntire three. Following that timeout, Kennedy Miles caught absolute fire, scoring 11 straight points on his own, including three straight threes. Miles would add two more buckets near the end of the half, and Borja Fernandez hit a jumper at the buzzer to send Wesleyan into the break with a commanding 52-35 lead.

The second half was a test on how well Kentucky Wesleyan could hold on to a lead against a quality team. Early on the boys were passing the test, as they kept it around a 20-point game for most of the frame. With 8:01 left in the game, Ferandez hit Edward Jones Jr. with a behind the back pass for a dunk, making it an 80-60 lead. The final eight minutes saw a frenzy of scoring, as the teams combined to score 43 points. The Trojans managed to cut it to 12 multiple times, but every time Wesleyan answered. The highlight of the night came with 2:31 remaining in the game, when Gray hit Jones Jr. for a lob poster dunk on the fast break, stopping any momentum the Trojans had. Wesleyan hit their free throws late and coasted to a 19-point victory.

The Panthers shot a very impressive 40-69 (58%) from the field and 7-18 (38.9%) from behind the arc. They didn't miss a free throw on the night, going 14-14 from the charity stripe. The Trojans were no slouches either, as they shot 29-59 (49.2%) from the field and 14-29 (48.3%).

Wesleyan dominated the paint, outscoring the Trojans 62-26 near the basket.

As stated earlier, Alex Gray led the way with a career high 26, followed by a career high 24 from Kennedy Miles. Borja Fernandez, who dealt with foul trouble in the first half, finished with 14 points in the second half and 20 for the game. Also in double-figures were Edward Jones Jr. (10) and Logan McIntire (10). Fernandez nearly notched a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, while Gray led with five assists. Jones Jr. was a menace defensively, notching a career high four blocks.

This is Wesleyan's sixth straight win, their second longest winning streak of the season.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday for a big game against the Thomas More Saints, who are coming off a convincing 84-65 win over Findlay this evening. Tipoff is set for 2:15 p.m. CT.
