OWENSBORO, KY – The Kentucky Wesleyan Women's Basketball team (12-4, GMAC 7-3) defeated the Storm of Lake Erie (1-15, GMAC 0-10) 75-45 on Thursday night. Despite starting slow on the offensive end, the Panthers were able to put it all together for their dominant 30-point home victory.
A rough start for both squads resulted in a 7-6 score nearly six minutes into the contest, until
Mariah Jones raced for the layup to give the Panthers a one-point lead. A layup and then a clean turnaround jumper from
Shaylee McDonald made it 19-14 at the end of the quarter.
With 1:43 left in the first quarter, fifth-year senior
Jordyn Barga scored her 1,000
th career point as a Panther at the charity stripe. The forward from Farmland, Indiana is currently averaging a career-high 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
An early 11-0 run from Wesleyan in the second quarter extended the lead to 14 points. Lake Erie came storming back, going on a quick run of their own to cut the lead to six.
Sydnee Richetto's pull-up jumper just before the buzzer gave the Panthers a 40-24 lead at the break.
Corina Conley maintained the hot hand coming out of the locker room, scoring the first four points of the half to raise her total to 15. It was all purple and white in the third quarter, as they outscored the Storm 18-5 and turned them over 14 times in the period alone. The Panthers boasted a 29-point lead heading into the fourth.
McDonald dropped dimes on consecutive possessions, one to Conley for a triple and another to
Emmy Ralph for an easy layup.
Jordan Gillies drilled one from beyond the arc with 2:57 left to extend the Panthers' lead to a game-high 37 points.
Conley led all scorers with 18 on the game. Barga nearly finished her special night with a double-double, recording 12 points and 9 rebounds. McDonald and
Shiya Hoosier each dished out four assists.
