Hot shooting dragons take down Panthers

TIFFIN, OH - Sometimes you just have it, and the Tiffin Dragons just had it on Thursday night. The Dragons hit a season high 14 threes en route to a 72-59 victory over the visiting Panthers. On the other end, Wesleyan struggled from behind the arc, only hitting six of their 23 attempts.

Tiffin improves to 10-5 (4-3 G-MAC), while Wesleyan falls to 11-5 (5-3 G-MAC).

The home side got out to an early 9-3 lead, thanks to three triples from three different Dragons. Down 14-5, a Logan McIntire three capped off a 9-0 run that saw the Panthers tie things up at 14. Tiffin then hit a layup and a three, and found themselves with a 28-21 lead just a few minutes later. McIntire hit another late layup, and the teams went scoreless over the final 1:42 of the half. Tiffin took advantage of some poor shooting from the Panthers and led 33-27 at the break.

Wesleyan fought to get back in it early in the second half, as a Borja Fernandez layup and two free throws from Edward Jones Jr. gave the Panthers a 40-38 lead with 15:58 remaining in the game. Just like that, an Ian Lopez three would spark a 10-0 Tiffin run, giving them a 48-40 advantage. An Alex Gray layup cut it to seven a few minutes later, but that would be as close as the Panthers would get, falling by 13.

As a team, Wesleyan shot 25-60 (41.7%) from the field and 6-23 (26.1%) from behind the arc. On the flip side, Tiffin went 29-61 (47.5%) from the floor and 14-32 (43.8%) from three. This game was won from the field, as Wesleyan shot all five free throws in the game, hitting three.

For the Panthers, Borja Fernandez led with 14 points, while Alex Gray notched a career high 13 rebounds, with four being on the offensive end. Kennedy Miles dished out six assists and added two steals.

Wesleyan will have a chance to even their record on the week on Saturday when they travel to Hillsdale, Michigan, to take on the Chargers. Hillsdale is coming off a nine-point loss to Walsh earlier tonight. Tipoff for that contest will be at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the G-MAC Digital Network, and Vic Evans will be on the call on WBIO 94.7.
