OWENSBORO, KY - Holding a one-game lead on Malone in the G-MAC standings, this four-game series against Ohio Dominican is vital. The Panthers proved they are determined to make it to Prasco Park next weekend, as they thumped ODU by scores of 11-3 and 10-4.
Wesleyan improves to 19-29 (13-17 G-MAC) while ODU falls to 24-23 (16-14 G-MAC).
Game One
It was the
Seth Wright show in the opener, as he got Wesleyan off on the right foot, striking out five batters in the first three innings of play. The Panthers gave him some support with the bats, as
Jaret Humphrey hit a 2-RBI double in the first inning to score
Kyle Werries and
Braxton French.
Ohio Dominican pulled on back in the top of the fourth, but a big bottom of the inning by the Panthers helped the home side pull away. A Werries walk and a Humphrey singled put two on with no outs early. Two batters later,
Bryce Zupan came through, hitting a single down the left field line to score Humphrey. A
Cameron Langston walk loaded the bases, and
Sammy Rowan extended the lead with a sacrifice fly on the next at bat. Closing out the scoring was senior
Aric Lyons, who knocked a 2-RBI double to right center to make it a 6-1 game after four.
Kentucky Wesleyan picked up three runs in the seventh thanks to a bases loaded balk and a 2-RBI single from
Zach Curtis. Two runs in the eighth from
Sammy Rowan and
Aric Lyons officailly sealed the win for the good guys.
Aric Lyons,
Braxton French,
Jaret Humphrey, and
Bryce Zupan each recorded two hits in the game, with Lyons, Humphrey, and
Zach Curtis all recording two RBI's.
Seth Wright was phenomenal on the mound, as he allowed just one earned run on four hits in seven innings of work, all while striking out 10. This was the second double-digit strikeout game of the season for Wright, and the third of his career.
Game Two
It was a rocky start to game two, as ODU scored three runs in the first to quickly go up 3-0.
Jaret Humphrey answered with a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the inning, making it a one run game after one.
A solo shot from Oho Dominican put them up 4-2 after two, but that would be the last time a Panther from Ohio would cross the plate on the day.
Kyle Werries hit a 2-RBI single in the third, and that was followed up by a 2-RBI double from
Zach Curtis, quickly turning a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead.
Cameron Langston joined in on the fun, closing the inning with an RBI single to make it 7-4 after three.
With
Evan Oakley shutting down the Ohio Dominican offense, Wesleyan cruised to the finish line.
Braxton French hit a solo home run in the fourth, and
Aric Lyons gave the game it's final score with a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
Zach Curtis was the star of the game, going 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI's.
Braxton French went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while
Jaret Humphrey went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored.
Evan Oakley (6-4) went the distance for the Panthers, striking out eight and allowing just four runs in the complete game victory.
Due to weather concerns, tomorrow's contests vs. Ohio Dominican have been moved up, with first pitch of the opener now scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Panther Park. Game two will start 30 minutes after the last out of game one.
