Rose pitches Panthers to split against Cedarville

OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers got a much needed series win on Monday, splitting with the Cedarville Yellow Jackets to take the series 3-1. CU came back to beat the Panthers 4-2 in the opener, but Wesleyan dominated the second game, shutting out the visitors 10-0.

Wesleyan now sits at 17-24 (11-13 G-MAC), while Cedarville is 11-30 (6-18 G-MAC).

Game One

In a polar opposite fashion of the series' opening two games, the first game of Monday's doubleheader was a low scoring one. Cedarville broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an RBI single to go up 1-0. The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the inning with RBI's from Kyle Werries and Zach Curtis, putting them up 2-1.

Wesleyan failed to record a hit in the final three innings of the game, and Cedarville tacked on three runs in the final two innings to grab the win.

Braxton French went 2-for-3 in the game, while Kyle Werries was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Starter Nick Judd struck out five for the Panthers. Nate Cunningham (1-1) took the loss.

Game Two

It was all Panthers in the second affair, as they took an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases loaded, Cameron Langston opened things up by scoring a run on a passed ball. Just two pitches later, Brandon Valdez extended the lead with a 2 RBI single to center. After Valdez stole two bases to land at third, Kyle Werries hit him home for the final run of the inning.

Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings, but Wesleyan exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Valdez continued his strong play with a 2 RBI signle to score Braxton French and Nick Wimber. Zach Curtis then worked the count for a bases loaded walk a few batter later, making it a 7-0 lead for the good guys. Cameron Langston hit a short hopping single to the shortstop to score another run, and Nick Wimber knocked in two more with a single to close out the scoring, giving Wesleyan a 10-0 lead and a chance to close it out in the top of the seventh.

A strikeout, pickoff by Bryce Zupan, and a popup secured the win for Wesleyan.

Brandon Valdez went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored, while Nick Wimber was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored of his own.

Isaac Rose (2-4) was phenomenal on the mound, allowing just five hits and striking out six in six innings of shutout work.

The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
