NORTH CANTON, OH - The Panthers gave it all they had on Tuesday night, but Walsh put together one too many runs for Wesleyan to come back from, and they eventually fell 75-70 to the regular season G-MAC champions. Playing in the final collegiate game of his career,
Jordan Roland gave it all he had, scoring a career high 30 points in the loss.
Kentucky Wesleyan closes their season with a record of 15-14 (11-9 G-MAC), while Walsh improves to 20-8 (16-4 G-MAC) and moves on to face Malone in the G-MAC semi-finals on Friday night.
The Panthers came out firing, going 4-4 to start the game and taking a quick 10-5 lead. Walsh came back to take the lead a few minutes later, but two
Jordan Roland threes put KWC up 20-17 with 9:13 remaining in the half. The threes kept falling for the Panthers, as
Kaeveon Mitchell joined the party with a three of his own at the 6:04 mark of the opening half, putting Wesleyan up 28-23. Another Roland three gave Wesleyan a six-point advantage and forced a Walsh timeout. The Cavaliers came back to take a 32-31 lead, but Wesleyan closed the half on a 7-0 run and led 38-32 going into the break.
Walsh came out with a vengeance in the second half, as they opened the period on a 20-2 scoring run, including a stretch where they outscored the Panthers 18-0. Despite this run, Wesleyan was never out, and they mounted a comeback of their own. Down 57-45, Wesleyan went on a quick 9-0 run that was capped off by an
Antonio Thomas jumper to cut the Cavalier lead to just three with 9:20 remaining. Walsh hit a few buckets to keep the Panthers at bay, but
Jordan Roland hit a tough layup and a three to keep the Panthers within striking distance, trailing just 63-59 with 6:08 remaining. Wesleyan then went cold, and Walsh took advantage, going on a 8-0 scoring run over the next two minutes that was eventually stopped by a layup from
Ben Sisson. The Panthers used full court pressure to get some late layups from
JoMel Boyd,
Ben Sisson and
Jordan Roland, but the damage was done, and Wesleyan saw their season end by a final score of 75-70.
Wesleyan went 27-62 (43.5%) from the field and 11-33 (33.3%) from distance. Walsh went 25-61 (41%) from the floor and 9-23 (39.1%) from three. The Cavaliers hit 16 of their 21 free throw attempts, while Wesleyan only shot five, hitting all five of them.
Jordan Roland hit six threes en-route to his career high 30 points.
Antonio Thomas (14) and
Ben Sisson (10) joined their fellow senior in double-figures. Sisson led the way with seven boards while Thomas, Sisson, and
Kennedy Miles each tallied three assists.
