Panthers pull away for fifth straight win

COLUMBUS, OH - After leading by just one point after the opening quarter, Wesleyan outscored Ohio Dominican 17-6 in the second quarter and cruised to the 63-44 victory. This marks the 21st win of the season for the Panthers, tied for the third most in the Nieman era.

Kentucky Wesleyan now sits at 21-5 (17-2 G-MAC), while Ohio Dominican falls to 6-20 (3-15 G-MAC).

Down 11-7, Kentucky Wesleyan used a pair of Tahlia Walton layups and a Hadley Lytton free throw to finish on a 5-0 run and lead 12-11 after one.

The second quarter started off slowly, with the teams combining to score just eight points in the first seven minutes of the frame. Wesleyan came alive in the final three minutes, as a Mariah Edmonds three sparked a 11-4 run by the Purple Panthers to close the half. At the break, KWC led 29-17.

Shaylee McDonald opened the third quarter with a three pointer, and Cali Nolot extended Wesleyan's lead to 34-18 just a minute later with a tough layup in the paint. The teams went back-and-forth over the rest of the quarter and Wesleyan led 46-33 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

Leading by 16, Kentucky Wesleyan essentially put the game away midway through the final quarter thanks to a layup by Reeva Hammelman and a jumper from Shiya Hoosier. The Panthers hit their free throws late to seal the 19-point victory.

Despite the win, Wesleyan shot poor from the field, going just 21-60 (35%) from the floor and 6-32 (18.8%) from three. Ohio Dominican shot 15-35 (42.9%) from the field and 2-7 (28.6%) from three. Wesleyan won thanks to dominating two categories, turnovers and offensive rebounds. Wesleyan forced an incredible 33 ODU turnovers, while committing just 17 of their own. They also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, which contributed to KWC getting 25 more shots than ODU.

Shiya Hoosier led the Panthers with 11 points, while Tahlia Walton joined her in double figures with 10. Jordyn Barga hauled in eight boards, while Corina Conley grabbed seven, including six big offensive rebounds. Hadley Lytton dished out three assists, while Hoosier, Conley, and Mariah Edmonds each picked up three steals.

The Panthers close their regular season on Saturday at Cedarville. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
