OWENSBORO, KY - It may have been cold outside, but the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball team's hot shooting was heating up the Sportscenter on Thursday night. The Panthers hit 63.5% of their shots from the field, and hit an outstanding 15 threes. The 15 threes is the fifth most in a single game in Panther history, and they hit them at a rate of 53.6%.
The Panthers move to 13-12 (9-8 G-MAC), while Trevecca Nazarene falls to 2-23 (1-18 G-MAC).
Wesleyan took control of this game early, never trailing throughout the entire contest. After being up 7-4, Eddie Jones Jr. capped off a 13-2 run with a three to make it a 20-6 with 12:54 remaining in the first half. Wesleyan kept pushing, extending their lead to 17 six minutes later on a jumper by
Ben Sisson. Two straight threes from
Kennedy Miles and
Antonio Thomas pushed the Panther lead to 41-20, and
Jordan Roland hit a fast break three with 38 seconds remaining in the half to give the Panthers a 48-20 lead at the break. The Wesleyan defense neither bent nor broke in that first half, holding TNU to just 9-33 (27.27%) from the floor and 1-13 (7.69%) from three.
Kentucky Wesleyan didn't let up to start the second half, extending their lead to 40 on a jumper by
Edward Jones Jr. Midway through the second half, the Panthers caught fire from behind the arc, as back-to-back threes from
JoMel Boyd sparked a run of five straight three point makes by the Panthers to eventually extend Wesleyan's lead to 89-39 with 7:42 remaining.
Alex Gray hit a few turnaround jumpers, and freshman
Carter Bischoff and
Gavin Tudor each added buckets of their own to give Wesleyan the 51-point victory.
The Panthers shot an incredible 40-63 (63.5%) from the field and 15-28 (53.6%) from three. Trevecca Nazarene shot 22-63 (34.9%) from the field and just 4-23 (17.4%) from behind the arc.
Kentucky Wesleyan put an incredible eight players in double-figures, with
JoMel Boyd leading the way with 17.
Ben Sisson and
Edward Jones Jr. each tallied 15,
Borja Fernandez notched 13,
Kennedy Miles had 11, and
Alex Gray and
Jordan Roland each added 10.
Kennedy Miles led the Panthers with 10 rebounds and seven assists, nearly recording a triple-double on the night. Sisson and Jones Jr. each blocked two shots while three players, Jones Jr., Roland, and
Antonio Thomas all dished out five assists.
Wesleyan will look to continue their winning ways when they host Malone on Saturday for senior day. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. CT, with the Men's Basketball seniors being honored before the game, and the cheerleading seniors being honored at halftime.
