Panthers close out 2023 home slate with big win over East-West

OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball team showed no signs of slowing down on Thursday night, as they took down the East West Phantoms by a final score of 96-59. This bring the Panthers winning streak to seven, their most since the 2016-17 season. After leading by 26 points at the break, Wesleyan shot over 50% in the second half to get the big win.

Wesleyan improves to 7-2 (3-0 G-MAC), while East-West falls to 0-9.

The Panthers never trailed in this game, as two free throws from Kennedy Miles to open the game broke the 0-0 tie, the only tie of the game. Up 8-7, an Alex Gray three and a Borja Fernandez layup extended Wesleyan's advantage to 13-7 five minutes in. Despite the final score, East-West put up a fight early, as they found themselves down just 25-24 with 8:39 left in the half. A media timout would calm the Panthers down, as they went on a quick 15-0 run to begin to pull away. That run was capped off by three straight threes off the hands of Logan McIntire, Miles, and Gray. Up big just before the break, Kennedy Miles picked the pocket of an EWU player, and Logan McIntire cleaned up a Panther miss at the buzzer to go into the break up 56-30.

Wesleyan didn't let up in the second half, as six early points from Fernandez put the home side up 73-37. The Panthers hit the 80 point mark for a third time this season thanks to layups from Fares Remouche and Gavin Reed, as well as a three from Kaeveon Mitchell. Two late buckets from Dom Subota powered the Panthers to the big 37-point victory.

The Panthers dominated thanks to their efficiency, going 37-66 (56.1%) from the field and 11-23 (47.8%) from behind the arc. While EWU shot fine from the field (26-60, 41.7%), they struggled from three, going 4-17 (23.5%). Wesleyan had 28 assists on their 37 field goals, while East-West only assisted 11 of theirs.

Both Borja Fernandez and Kennedy Miles finished with 18 points in the game. Fernandez went 9-10 from the field, while Miles hit three threes. Also finishing in double-figures were Logan McIntire (14) and Dom Subota (11). Junior NaVuan Peterson led the way with eight boards, while Alex Gray messed around and dished out nine assists.

Wesleyan will turn around and head north this weekend, as they travel to the Upper Peninsula to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Sunday. MTU currently sits at 2-6, but are coming off a good win over Wayne State (Mich.). Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
