An Unscripted Finish in Louisville

Panthers Topple Cards in Exhibition Contest

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The small details matter in big games. The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team utilized a team effort on Monday night to upset Louisville 71-68 at the KFC Yum Center. The Panthers were six for six from the foul line in the final 15 seconds with four free throws coming from Kaeveon Mitchell down the stretch.

It was a quick series of hustle plays that gave the Panthers the edge in the final six minutes of the game. Edward Jones Jr., grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put-back to tie the game at 49. On the ensuing possession, Kennedy Miles got to the foul line. Miles made the first, but after missing the second free throw, Alex Gray grabbed the offensive board.

Gray quickly found Miles at the top of the key who buried a three, giving the Panthers a 53-49 lead with five minutes left. The Cardinals would get no closer than one point the rest of the way. Jones would give the Panthers a five-point lead 56-51 after another three with 3:36 left on the clock.

mitchellThe two-possession cushion was short lived as the final minutes of the game led to some tense moments. The Panthers did not break under the pressure. After two Mike James free throws that cut the Cardinals deficit to 59-57 with two minutes left, Kaeveon Mitchell provided the response with his third three-point bucket of the game, giving the Panthers a 62-57 lead.

The Cardinals again got to the foul line with two more James free throws bringing the game back to one possession, 62-59. The Panthers out hustled the Cardinals on the next possession as Jake Evans battled for the offensive rebound after a missed three and the Panthers were able to burn more clock.

Jones' lay-up with 37 seconds left provided a brief exhale for the Panthers, but the Cards still had life with an immediate three-point-play from Skyy Clark. Evans' free throw pushed the lead back up to three points, 65-62 with 28 seconds left, but Clark got to the line again to cut the Panthers lead down to 65-63. With only 15 second left in the contest the Cardinals were forced to foul, but the Panthers did not miss from the line.

For as action packed as the final six minutes were, the first half was slow to develop. The Cardinals held a 9-8 lead 10 minutes into the contest. Louisville led by as many as five points in the first half, but went into the locker-room tied at 26. Borja Fernandez converted a lay-up with seven seconds left to tie the game at the break. Fernandez scored 12 points in the opening half and finished the game 19 points and seven rebounds.

Mitchell added 13 points including sealing the game with clutch free throws. Logan McIntire, Miles, and Jones each finished with 10 points. Jones also grabbed eight rebounds. Alex Gray finished with eight rebounds and one assist.

The Panthers will travel to Bowling Green next week to play Western Kentucky on November 6th. Tip-off at Diddle Arena is scheduled for 7:30PM.
