NASHVILLE, TN - Just like the temperature outside, the Panthers seemed to go cold on Tuesday night in Nashville, shooting just 31.7% from the field in a 63-55 loss to a good Trevecca Nazarene team.
Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 16-5 (12-2 G-MAC), while Trevecca improves to 15-7 (10-4 G-MAC).
Trevecca opened up the game with a three pointer on their opening possession. That would be the only lead change of the game, as TNU held the lead the entire game. Wesleyan kept it close early, cutting the lead to just 13-12 on a three from
Jordyn Barga and a free throw from
Corina Conley, but Trevecca finished the quarter strong and led 18-12 after one.
With just a few minutes left in the half, it looked as though Wesleyan was going to come back to take the lead.
Tahlia Walton knocked in a few free throws and
Reeva Hammelman made a layup to make it a 28-24 TNU lead with just over a minute remaining in the half. Trevecca hit a jumper with a minute remaining and took a 30-24 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers struggled in the third, going just 4-14 from the field and 1-7 from three in the frame. Trevecca took advantage and took a 43-33 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
After going down 55-34 midway through the fourth, Wesleyan nearly came back, outscoring the Trojans 21-8 over the final four minutes of play. It wasn't enough, however, as TNU held on for the win.
Wesleyan shot 19-60 (31.7%) from the field and 7-27 (25.9%) from three. Trevecca shot 23-55 (41.8%) from the field and 5-18 (27.8%) from three.
Jordyn Barga led the Panthers with 10 points, while
Corina Conley added a season high 11 rebounds.
The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday at the Sportscenter when they host the Ohio Dominican Panthers. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
